Monday Mullings

>>The world would be an infinitely better place if everyone stayed to the right.

>>Wouldn't it be super if everyone remembered -- and honored -- the fact that we all came from the same gene pool?

>>My solution to the economic downturn? SPread the joy by reducing the workload of the employed by 20% (or more) and give the work to the un- and under-employed (because I don't know ANYONE who says the amount of time they work is 'just right').

***

The Writing... Lots of news, all good. UNCTION, a poem I wrote during the April poem-writing frenzy, was selected by Robert Brewer at Poetic Asides as one of Top 50 poems that month.

>>>>The complete first draft of PURE clocked in at 99,700 words as of Sunday morning. Yay! Now I can work on new stff. Double yay!<<<<<

The Reading... Finishing The Corrections (Jonathan Franzen) and deep into Annie Lamott's Imperfect Birds. Both fabulous. Other good reads, all shorts, include this week's 52/250 collection of flashes gathered round the theme of 'union of opposites'.

Enjoy your Monday -- may it soon be closer to Friday! Peace, Linda

  1. Congrats on the poem, and on the first draft of Pure. Hurray!

And I totally agree with you on the "keep to the right" idea.

  2. WOW! Congrats! And that is a totally respectable word count for a good novel :) Can't wait to read it. And congrats on your poem getting picked!

I am reading a book that kinda makes me think of you - The Night of the Gun by David Carr, a memoir about drug addiction, recovery and researching his own past as some of the things he thought he recalled during the addict times were way off. Anyway it just seemed like something you might enjoy reading and it goes quick.

  4. Thanks all! Yeah, the word count of BTB 1st draft was 183,000 -- I think I've gotten more efficient.

And thanks Chrys for the book recomend -- I adore reads like that. And um, I can send you the half of PURE soon if you really want to read it. Let me know.

    Peace...

  5. NIce going Linda - I think your word count is perfect, though every story has its own pace, it should appeal to many publishers, and knowing your writing, the story itself should do well too. Good luck and congrats.

  6. Of course I really want to read it. Are you kidding? I remember when it was just an idea - this is awesome!

And yeah, that book totally made me think of you. I am about halfway done. And the author is a journalist so he brings that to the table.

  7. That's so cool that your poem was one of Robert Brewer's top 50 of the month! Congrats!

I like your mulling about people staying on the right. There are always tourists in London that like to ignore this rule and I have to loudly inform them of what everyone else already knows.

  8. I guess it's hard to stay right when deep down people know they are wrong.

a very moving poem well deserving of being in the top 50

  9. The "stay to the right" rule would be particularly nice in stores.

Congratulations on completing that first draft! It's quite a banger you've been tinkering with.

  11. Congratulations on finishing off Pure, Linda. Quite an accomplishment. Cant' wait for it to find a publisher.

I just read Unction. Wow, what a moving piece. A beautifully rendered poem about a really painful experience. Both lovely and sad. I can't adequately express how much it moved me.

  12. Congratulations on both your novel and your poem. That is an awesome!

Just went back and read your poem. I think he made a mistake by not listing you higher. That was incredible.

    Thanks for sharing. :)

  13. Hey all, thanks for dropping by and thanks especially for reading UNCTION. It's one of my most favorite pieces I've written because it honors my father. It's my epitaph to him...

And thanks also for the good wishes for PURE. It STILL has a long way to go, I keep thinking of themes and motifs that need to be further developed. But the bones are down, and so is the musculature. Peace...
