At least that's the case for me.

John, I LOVE slow, lazy beginnings, as long as they engage with the words. How one starts a big sorta reflects the yin and yang of commercial versus literary. I do know this -- your beginning must be organic to the story and true to the character. Gratuitous sex, violence, action of any sort which is NOT germane to the story and theme is a waste.

Peace...Lindahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01110078016784294934noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7186877685534377957.post-9261597880380935202010-06-16T08:22:35.672-04:002010-06-16T08:22:35.672-04:00Excellent advice, Linda. I usually start any scene as close to the action or as close to the character as possible.Stephenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04753736809917062955noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7186877685534377957.post-47276150172227403862010-06-15T23:38:10.687-04:002010-06-15T23:38:10.687-04:00I adore the Douglas Adams slow, meandering, chatty...I adore the Douglas Adams slow, meandering, chatty intro. It took a long time to beat it back, such that it only takes up a few of my stories now.

Though to be fair, I started my first novel with a man running from cannibals, hanging onto the hem of stolen pants that were too big for him.

Your whole post rings of simple truth. I wouldn't quash all slow writing - it can be done well, it's just that we must make it rarer so we can appreciate the well done examples.John Wiswellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07416044628686736927noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7186877685534377957.post-23241293000126719992010-06-15T00:18:55.697-04:002010-06-15T00:18:55.697-04:00great advice, linda... i love screenwriting texts....great advice, linda... i love screenwriting texts. chock full of great tips.

Congrats to the little guy!Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11413377601369107260noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7186877685534377957.post-62658946123091176452010-06-14T14:20:52.363-04:002010-06-14T14:20:52.363-04:00great points.

Finding the beginning is a challenge - you need to introduce your character's 'ordinary world' so they know how much is at stake when events unfold, but without unnecessary rambling.
I have no doubt you'll be able to do this - that sentence is fantastic.EChttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09359075647077590741noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7186877685534377957.post-25220301947221303802010-06-14T08:37:15.729-04:002010-06-14T08:37:15.729-04:00Some really great points here, Linda.
